I encountered a loss of a special event seedling (Purple Popcorn / Movie Theater category) during the Super Mario Galaxy Movie event. After using a free detector, the seedling appeared and I sent an expedition to retrieve it. Shortly after, I received a Giant Mushroom invite. To prioritize the mushroom, I cancelled the active seedling expedition.
The Problem: Upon cancelling, the seedling completely disappeared from my expedition list and Map. It did not return to the available expeditions, nor is it in my inventory.
Steps Taken to Resolve:
Expected Result:
Cancelling an expedition should return the item to the “Expedition” list so it can be attempted again later, especially since the “Known Issue” regarding Movie Theater seedlings was supposedly resolved on April 27, 2026.
Actual Result:
The seedling has vanished permanently, resulting in the loss of a rare event item and a used Detector.

If Pikmin that went to retrieve an item cancels the expedition after reaching the item and starting its return journey, the item will disappear. This is how the game has been designed since its initial release.
@lavista1960, that’s good to know. So I am guessing you have done this before without the expedition disappearing. Probably in those instances your Pikmin had not retrieved the item so the expedition remained. That makes sense, if your Pikmin are holding something you can’t expect them to just leave it where you cancelled. It is too bad there isn’t an alert letting you know the item would be lost if you cancelled. I had an expedition item disappear when I cancelled one time so I just never did it again. It is nice to know I can cancel if they haven’t reached the item tho.

I’ve had the experience of losing an expedition several times. I learned after my several mistake.
The image below shows the Pikmin before they reach the item, with the item displayed to the right of the Pikmin.
Once the Pikmin reach an item and begin their journey back, the item will appear above the Pikmin.
If you try to cancel the expedition in this state, a warning dialog like below will appear.

Thank you for the detailed response! I guess the popup box when cancelling an expedition when the Pikmin’s already carrying the seedling should be straightforward, like “will be lost” or “will be discarded permanently” instead of just “drop?” sometimes it’s hard to be a non-native English speaker I misinterpreted it incorrectly. It was an expensive lesson though since we have to travel around 2ish hours for a rare movie decors
