Try joining the weekly walking/planting groups with random players, then send requests to players around the same or lower levels. Don’t get discouraged when they don’t accept, eventually you’ll get some players who accept and maybe even get requests from other players. Keep trying. You’re more likely to get accepted if you are contributing to the group.
Don’t neglect players from other countries too. They may end up inviting you to interesting battle sites.

If you have unlocked mushroom battles join mushroom battles with other players and send friend requests to them. If they accept call them to mushrooms and they might also call you. If you join your friend’s mushroom you can send friend requests to others that join. I don’t know why people want friends unless it’s for mushroom battles and postcards so I hope this helps.
