Every time I want to fill my squad, I have to go Pikmin by Pikmin, and the game tells me they’re busy doing something, which is fine, but an icon that indicates whether they’re fighting or gathering would be great and would help me choose the ones that are free to fill the squad.

You can use the search bar to filter out busy Pikmin. Use the exclamation point to exclude, so if you enter “!busy” you won’t see them.
